About Me

When asked, as I frequently am, why I should concern myself so deeply with the conservation of animal life, I reply that I have been very lucky and that throughout my life the world has given me the most enormous pleasure.  But the world is as delicate and as complicated as a spider’s web.  If you touch one thread you send shudders running through all the other threads.  We are not just touching the web, we are tearing great holes in it.” ~ Gerald Durrell 1925-1995.

Welcome!

My name’s Sam and I’m a marine conservation biologist/ecologist and a marine science communicator.

I am passionate about all marine science, but my particular interest lies in spatial ecology (why and when species occupy different parts of the marine environment, and their movements through the ocean), and spatial management measures for conservation.  What really gets me excited is the concept of managing our interactions with mobile marine species/life stages through spatial conservation strategies, such as dynamic ocean management and marine protected area network design.

I write for a number of different publications, as well as other forms of public outreach, but because I love science communication so much, I also post open-access pieces regularly on the web.  Larger pieces appear on this site, as well as Google+. I also use LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter for shorter stories. I don’t agree with all of the articles I link to, but  I’ll leave it up to you to form your own opinions on the pieces.  I’m always happy to explain and debate issues too so don’t be shy about commenting, or sending me a private message if you prefer.

Have you got a marine science or conservation story you want to get out to the public? Have you published a peer-reviewed paper you would like more people to hear about? Running a marine science/conservation event that you want covered? Feel free to contact me.
